He was contracted to Astro City in 1997 to track down the Shadow Hill Killer and nearly wound up killed by the creature. Powers Chalk is part man part cyborg, fashioned from cold iron and silver, with RAM containing volumes of occult lore. Chalk carries a shotgun with specialized charges such as wolfsbane and holy water. Observations Chalk lost his leg to werewolves and his eye to demonic praying mantises.
